Effects of reading education program by picture books on the self-esteem of students with mental retardation

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a reading education program by picture books on the self-esteem of students with mental retardation. The subjects in this study were 16 mentally retarded students in their sixth grade in H special school located in the city of Busan. After they were divided into an experimental group and a control group, statistical data on mean and standard deviation of CA, MA, and SAB were obtained to look for any possible intergroup gaps, and t-test was carried out. Descriptive statistics was employed to acquire another statistical data on mean and standard deviation of self-esteem pretest and posttest scores for both groups, and an intergroup t-test was conducted. The findings of the study were as follows: The reading education program by picture books had a statistically significant impact on the improvement of the self-esteem(general, social and school) of the mentally retarded students. They made a slight progress in home self-esteem. Therefore the reading education program by picture books was effective at boosting the self-esteem of the mentally retarded students. Basically, it¡¯s meant in this study to provide an opportunity for the students to read and listen to picture books, to do role play in group, to foster their spontaneity and ultimately to bolster self-esteem on their own initiative, which referred to loving themselves and others, on the assumption that the reading education program tailored to the educational needs of the mentally retarded students and the characteristics of educational setting might be conducive to the improvement of the self-esteem of the mentally retarded students. And the purpose of the study was accomplished to some extent.
